Scotland’s Tartan Army quite literally made the ground tremble as they celebrated the men’s team reaching their first World Cup in 28 years.
The British Geological Survey (BGS) detected what it described as the equivalent of an “extremely small earthquake” when Kenny McLean lofted the ball over Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel to seal a 4–2 victory.
Moments later, a second burst of seismic activity was recorded as the final whistle confirmed Scotland’s historic triumph on Wednesday night.
The readings were captured at the BGS station at the Glasgow Geothermal Observatory in Dalmarnock — around 2km (1.2 miles) from Hampden Park.
