There is welcome news for the Cumbernauld community, with confirmation that St Mungo’s Church will be rebuilt after the devastating fire that destroyed the iconic building last year.
The distinctive church, renowned for its striking pyramid-shaped roof, was reduced to ruins when a major blaze broke out on 2 August 2025. The loss shocked local residents and the many community groups who regularly used the much-loved building.
Marking the first anniversary of the fire, parish minister Rev James Gemmell announced plans for a brand-new worship centre during a special open-air service held on the church grounds.
The original B-listed church, designed by acclaimed architect Alan Reiach, had been a familiar landmark in Cumbernauld town centre since the 1960s. While the historic building was lost, the announcement signals a new chapter for the congregation and wider community, who will once again have a dedicated place for worship and local activities.
The plans have been warmly welcomed by many, offering hope that St Mungo’s legacy will continue for generations to come.
