UK Government Introduces Digital Driving Licences

January 18, 2025

The UK government is set to introduce digital driving licences as part of its efforts to modernise public services through technology.

These licences will be accessible via a new government smartphone app and could serve as valid identification for activities such as purchasing alcohol, voting, or boarding domestic flights.

While physical licences will still be available, the voluntary digital alternative aims to “drag government into the 2020s,”. A government spokesperson added: “This government is committed to using technology to make people’s lives easier and transform public services. Technology now enables digital identities to be more secure than physical ones, but we remain clear that their use will not be mandatory.”
