Ava’s Marine Science Scholarship

July 27, 2025

Ava Ruston, a talented student from Hamilton, is preparing to jet off to the USA after securing a dream scholarship that perfectly combines her love for marine science and scuba diving.

The former Dalziel High pupil will soon begin a four-year degree at Eckerd College in St Petersburg, Florida, thanks to a prestigious merit scholarship. Ava, who became a master scuba diver after discovering the sport during a 2019 family holiday to Greece, attended a summer programme at the Florida college two years ago — and instantly knew it was where she belonged.

Now, her dream is becoming reality.

Ava’s fascination with marine animals — from manatees to sharks — has fuelled her ambition. Over the years, she’s progressed through multiple diving qualifications and found Eckerd College while searching for marine science camps that suited her passion.

Next month, Ava heads across the Atlantic, supported by proud parents Yvonne and Mark and her twin brother Lewis, who will help her settle in. She said:

“I’m really looking forward to getting started, being at college and meeting people from different cultures.”

Wishing Ava the very best as she begins this exciting new chapter in America! 🇺🇸💙
