Scotland is braced tonight for its lowest January temperatures in 15 years.
A yellow warning for snow and ice has been issued for the north of the country.
The Met Office has forecast that Thursday’s temperatures could drop below the -14°C recorded in Dalwhinnie, Highlands, last year. To surpass this and become the coldest January temperature in Scotland since 2010, the thermometer would need to fall below -16°C. The record low of -22.3°C was set in Altnaharra, Highlands, in 2010.
Due to the ongoing alert, which remains in effect until 10:00 on Friday, hundreds of schools across Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray, the Highlands, Orkney, Shetland, and the Outer Hebrides are expected to remain closed.
