Temperatures in a hamlet in northern Scotland fell to -18.7°C on Friday, marking the UK’s coldest January night in 15 years.
According to the Met Office, the mercury in Altnaharra, located in the northernmost part of the Highlands, dropped around 22:00 GMT. Much of the UK experienced sub-zero temperatures into Saturday morning, with -11°C recorded in Shap, Cumbria, and -5°C at Heathrow.
Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin commented, “Friday night into Saturday morning may well be the nadir of this current cold spell.”
