New York’s First Congestion Charge Explained

January 5, 2025

New York has introduced the first congestion charge scheme for vehicles in the United States.

Car drivers will be charged up to $9 (£7) per day, with varying rates applied to other types of vehicles. The congestion zone encompasses the area south of Central Park, including iconic landmarks such as the Empire State Building, Times Square, and the financial district around Wall Street.

The initiative aims to alleviate New York’s infamous traffic congestion while generating billions of dollars to improve the public transport network. However, it has faced opposition, including from prominent New Yorker and President-elect Donald Trump.

Initially proposed by New York State Governor Kathy Hochul two years ago, the scheme was delayed and adjusted following criticism from commuters and businesses.
