Lanarkshire Sees Disruptive Snowfall: Commuter Challenges

January 5, 2025

Lanarkshire woke up to a blanket of snow this morning, transforming its towns and villages into picturesque winter scenes but causing significant disruption across the region. The Met Office had issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice, and the forecast proved accurate as several centimetres of snow fell overnight.

Travel Disruption

Commuters faced delays as snow-covered roads and icy conditions made travel hazardous. Key routes, including the M74 and A71, were particularly affected, with reports of slow-moving traffic and minor accidents. Public transport services also faced challenges, with ScotRail announcing delays and cancellations on several lines. Local bus services were similarly impacted, leaving many residents struggling to reach work, school, or appointments.

The council has deployed gritters and snowploughs across the area, prioritising main roads and emergency access routes. However, many secondary roads and pavements remain treacherous, prompting calls for extra caution from pedestrians and drivers alike.
