Scotland Weather Alert: Snowfall and Icy Conditions This Weekend

January 4, 2025

Scotland is bracing for significant snowfall and icy conditions over the weekend, with temperatures expected to plummet to -10°C. The Met Office has issued multiple yellow warnings:

  • Ice Alert: In effect across most of the country until 10:00 on Saturday, cautioning of challenging travel conditions.
  • Highlands Ice Warning: Active from 16:00 on Saturday until 10:00 on Sunday.
  • Shetland Snow Warning: In place between 10:00 and 18:00 on Saturday, predicting up to 5cm of snow, increasing to 10-20cm over higher ground.

These conditions may lead to power outages and travel disruptions. Several football matches, including Airdrieonians vs. Falkirk, have already been postponed due to frozen pitches.

Travel Advice:

  • Network Rail: Anticipates harsh frost but plans to operate normal timetables. Passengers should check for updates before traveling.
  • First Minister John Swinney: Urges everyone to heed weather warnings and prioritize safety.

Stay informed, plan your journeys carefully, and stay safe during this cold snap!
