A new tribute to football icon Tommy Gemmell has been revealed in his hometown of Craigneuk, North Lanarkshire.
Best known as one of Celtic’s famous Lisbon Lions, Gemmell played a key role in the club’s historic 1967 European Cup triumph, finding the net in the final against Inter Milan. He also scored in the 1970 final, although Celtic were beaten by Feyenoord.
The defender spent ten successful years with Celtic from 1961 to 1971 and earned 18 international appearances for Scotland. Gemmell passed away in 2017 at the age of 73.
His wife Mary described the statue, created by sculptor Andy Edwards, as “absolutely breathtaking.”
