Local Walker Saves Giant Turtle on Solway Coast

December 13, 2025

A giant sea turtle has been discovered on a beach beside Southerness Golf Club on the Solway Coast after being spotted by a local walker.

Valerie Smith Lang found the reptile on Thursday evening after it had been washed ashore and was lying next to a stranded buoy. At first, she believed the turtle was dead, but soon realised it was “just in shock”.

Speaking about the incident, she explained: “I called the SSPCA and took it back to my garden to keep it safe while I waited for them to arrive. Following their advice, I wrapped it in a towel soaked in sea water to keep it hydrated, and it then started moving.”

The quick-thinking response helped ensure the turtle was protected while specialist help was on the way.
