North Lanarkshire’s Tower Block Replacement Plan

May 14, 2025

North Lanarkshire Council is pressing ahead with its strategy to replace its hi rise tower blocks.

To date, over 1,600 properties have been vacated as part of Phase 1, with several towers now demolished and others repurposed to support the Ukraine Resettlement Programme. Phase 2 is well underway, with decanting progressing across sites in Wishaw, Kilsyth, Airdrie, Coatbridge and Motherwell.

Key milestones include the ongoing demolition works at Jackson Court in Coatbridge, and Coursington, Allan, and Draffen Towers in Motherwell, where a controlled blowdown is planned for later this year. Preparations are also advancing for future demolitions at Dunbeth Court in Coatbridge and Allershaw Tower, Wishaw.

Speaking after the latest housing committee, Councillor Michael McPake, convener of housing, said: “We’re making real progress in delivering safe, modern homes that meet the needs of our residents. This programme is not just about replacing buildings, it’s about improving lives, enhancing communities, and ensuring our housing stock is fit for the future.”
