Cyber Attack Causes Food Shortages in Scottish Co-op Stores

May 7, 2025

Several Co-op stores across Scotland are experiencing shortages of fresh food following a cyber attack on the company.

Co-op, the primary retailer on Skye, has seen its Portree supermarket left with rows of empty shelves, with similar issues reported in shops across the Western Isles.

The disruption follows the company’s admission on Friday that a cyber attack had led to a “significant” breach of customer data.

A Co-op spokesperson said deliveries to mainland stores had also been affected by “sustained malicious attempts by hackers to access our systems”, and staff are working around the clock to minimise the impact.
