Child Safety Incident at Lanarkshire Nursery

March 1, 2025

A shocking lapse of supervision at a local nursery occurred last week when a young child “briefly” walked out of a Lanarkshire nursery without staff noticing. South Lanarkshire council has now confirmed the incident.

On Wednesday 26th February, the youngster wandered out to the school gates unsupervised at Bankhead Primary and Nursery School in Rutherglen, before a staff member was alerted and fetched the child back in.

South Lanarkshire authorities have since discussed the matter with the child’s concerned parents and are reviewing the incident to “learn any lessons”.

A local source added, “A child of about three or four years old walked out to the school gates and was stopped by South Lanarkshire workers who were working at gates. They were returned to the school as they were unaware he was missing.”

Jacqueline Wallace, Head of Education (Primary and Early Years) at South Lanarkshire Council, said: “I can confirm that a child did very briefly leave the nursery.

“While the child was intercepted by a member of nursery staff and was quickly returned to the premises, it is nonetheless a matter we take very seriously.

“We have therefore been in discussion with the child’s parents and are reviewing the incident in order to learn any lessons. We have also reported the matter to the Care Inspectorate.”

“We are liaising with the service provider to ensure the safety of children is paramount and will take any further appropriate action as required.

“The safety of every child who experiences care is always our first priority.”
