North Lanarkshire Council Approves Historic Council Tax Hike

February 21, 2025

North Lanarkshire Council is amongst the first five local authorities across Scotland to approve the steepest council tax rises in 20 years as the nationwide freeze comes to an end.

Residents in Scotland have enjoyed frozen council tax for the best part of 2 decade, but things are changing with councils now setting their own rates, going against advice of the Scottish Government.

North Lanarkshire and Scottish Borders councils have voted for a whopping 10% increase, while Fife has opted for an 8.2% rise. In Edinburgh, councillors backed an 8% hike, and Glasgow City Council—the largest in Scotland—agreed to a 7.5% increase, supported by the SNP and Greens. Part of Glasgow’s additional revenue will be allocated to enhanced street cleaning.

Rates for other councils including South Lanarkshire are awaited.
