Mears has announced the launch of its 2025 North Lanarkshire Apprenticeship Recruitment Programme, reinforcing its commitment to training young people and supporting local employment.
A key element of this partnership is investing in apprenticeships to develop skills and provide long-term career opportunities.
Building on the success of last year’s scheme, which saw 35 apprentices join the company, the 2025 intake will offer placements across a range of skilled trades, including joinery, plumbing, electrical work, bricklaying, plastering and heating engineering.
Mears is the largest employer of apprentice plumbers in Scotland.
Alan Burns, Mears’ Managing Director, who started his career as an apprentice, highlighted the programme’s value.
He said: “An apprenticeship is a fantastic opportunity for any young person—I can say that proudly as an ex-apprentice myself.
“It provides structured learning, a springboard for lifelong development, and the power to transform lives. We are excited to continue supporting young talent in North Lanarkshire.”
The programme is part of Mears’ partnership with North Lanarkshire Council, which began in 2024 under the Housing and Corporate Property Services Enterprise Contract.
North Lanarkshire Council Leader, Councillor Jim Logue, also welcomed the initiative, emphasising its importance for young people in the area. “We are committed to providing meaningful and sustainable employment opportunities within our communities.
“This partnership with Mears allows us to do just that—giving young people the chance to start their careers, gain valuable experience, and contribute to improving North Lanarkshire.”
One of last year’s recruits is already seeing the benefits of an apprenticeship in plumbing, saying: “I’ve always wanted to learn a trade, and this apprenticeship has been a great way to start.
“I’m getting hands-on experience while also working towards my qualifications. It’s been a brilliant opportunity.”
With the 2025 apprenticeship scheme now open for applications, Mears and North Lanarkshire Council are keen to encourage young people from all backgrounds to apply.
The initiative aims to build a skilled workforce for the future while helping apprentices gain practical experience and long-term employment prospects.
