HMP Glasgow: £998 Million Cost and Overcrowding Solutions

February 6, 2025

The replacement for Barlinnie Prison is set to cost nearly a whopping £1 billion—almost twice the previous estimate.

Justice Secretary Angela Constance confirmed in a letter to the criminal justice committee that HMP Glasgow will have a final price tag of £998.4 million. She also revealed that the prison’s opening has been delayed until 2028, three years later than originally planned.

Located in the Germiston area, the new facility will have a capacity of 1,344 inmates, adding 357 places to Scotland’s prison estate in a bid to tackle persistent overcrowding.

Have your say. A Billion pounds for a new prison?! How does this sit with our readers? What could the money have been spent on otherwise?
