As part of the Hamilton Community Growth Area development, four key junctions are set to be upgraded. The works will be phased to minimise disruption as much as possible.
Initial Phase
The first phase of improvements will commence on Monday, 13 January, at the Gateside Street/Johnstone Road junction, where traffic signals will be introduced. Regular users of Gateside Street may already have noticed signage indicating the upcoming works. Local businesses, shops, and residents have also been informed.
Later Phases in 2025
Later in the year, a rolling programme of works will improve several other junctions:
- Strathaven Road/Mill Road junction: Installation of traffic signals.
- Wellhall Road/Hillhouse Road/Woodfoot Road roundabouts: Upgrades and enhancements.
- Woodfoot Road/Laighstonehall Road junction: Alterations to improve functionality.
Each phase of these works is expected to last two to three months, with the entire programme scheduled for completion by autumn/winter 2025. Detailed plans for each phase will be shared in advance.
Funding and Traffic Management
The £4.2 million project is being funded externally through the City Deal. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation during much of the works, with potential road closures required for certain activities. These measures are designed to ensure the safety of road users and workers alike.
Colin Park, Head of Roads, Transportation and Fleet Services at the council, commented:
“Temporary traffic management will be in place throughout each phase of the works. While delays and disruption are expected, every effort will be made to minimise them.
“Once completed, these junctions will be easier for both pedestrians and drivers to navigate, improving efficiency across these key corridors.”
