Illegal pavement parking will be enforced by North Lanarkshire Council with a fine of up to £100 from this week. .
The Transport (Scotland) Act 2019 makes it illegal to park on the pavement in Scotland, as well as double parking and at dropped kerbs designed to allow pedestrians to cross the road safely. The law does not apply to dropped kerbs at private driveways.
North Lanarkshire Council parking attendants will issue Fixed Penalty Notices to vehicles parked on pavements, with priority given to town centres and areas with high footfall.
Since January, ahead of enforcement starting, attendants have been placing warning notices on vehicles parking illegally to give notice of the law.
“The law aims to make our roads safer for pedestrians by avoiding having to step into the road to walk around parked cars,” said Councillor Helen Loughran, Convener of the Environment and Climate Change Committee.
“This is a particular issue for people with a visual impairment, families with children and buggies and wheelchair users.
“It is vital we take this action to prevent accidents in our communities and keep pedestrians safe.”
The fine for parking illegally is £100, reduced to £50 if paid within 14 days.
