A tax officer who embezzled thousands of pounds from HMRC to clear her mortgage and settle other debts has been sentenced to two years in prison.
Joanne Connell, 37, exploited her role in the bankruptcy team and her access to HMRC’s self-assessment system to create fraudulent credits on the records of two unsuspecting taxpayers.
She then redirected these funds into her own bank account.
Connell, from East Kilbride, stole £193,000 between April and September 2022.
She pleaded guilty to embezzlement and was sentenced at Hamilton Sheriff Court.
