New Bird Flu Restrictions in Scotland: What You Need to Know

December 27, 2025

New restrictions have been introduced after a fresh outbreak of bird flu was confirmed at a farm in the Scottish Borders.

Scotland’s chief veterinary officer confirmed that the H5N1 strain of avian influenza was identified at Kingside Farm in Leadburn, near West Linton, on Wednesday.

As a result, a 3km protection zone and a wider 10km surveillance zone have been established around the site, extending into neighbouring areas of Midlothian.

The latest case means there are now three active control zones in the local area, following confirmed outbreaks at nearby farms last week. A fourth control zone has also been in place near Lanark since November, after avian flu was detected at a poultry farm there.

Officials are continuing to monitor the situation closely, with biosecurity measures in place to help limit further spread.
